The Cottage
St Briavels
Residential
The original cottage is sited overlooking the most picturesque section of the Wye Valley between Monmouth and Chepstow, close to Tintern Abbey. The house had been acquired in the 1980’s and largely rebuilt within the existing shell; the clients were now keen to extend the house to increase the number and quality of the bedrooms, create a large living/dining/kitchen with better access to the garden with picture windows to take advantage of the stunning view over the Wye Valley.
The scheme effectively doubled the size of the house and the design proposed a matching building with a more contemporary styling alongside the existing house, with a glazed strip to separate the two (and with a new ridge height 50mm below that of the existing to satisfy the Planning Requirements!). The construction was simple blockwork cavity construction rendered with powder coated aluminium joinery and a natural slate roof.
The interior was finished with underfloor heating below a slate tiled floor to the living room, an oak staircase with matching full height balustrading and oak ledged and braced doors
